Space Falcon Commander – Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Space Falcon? – Flash

"Should I have?"
"It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I’ve outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I’m talking about the big Corellian ships now. She’s fast enough for you old man. What’s the cargo?"

SpaceFalconCommanderSS01Okay okay, so that was the Millennium Falcon.  But now we have the Space Falcon.  Space Falcon Commander that is.  Just what IS Space Falcon Commander, you ask?  It’s a game.  “I know it’s a game, you imbecile!” I hear you shout in your minds!  It’s a game for the iPhone.  Ahhh… Wait a second, Uhfgood, you don’t do iPhone games, do you?  You’re quite right, I don’t have an iPhone, or an iPod Touch, which by the way if anyone could oblige me with one, I’ll be happy to review iPhone games, er that is, if you can actually play a demo on those things.  Maybe they’re so low priced, they don’t do demos?  However since this is Flash Friday, I had the opportunity to play a flash version of it.

Space Falcon Commander by Rapid Turtle Games is a top down, vertical scrolling, SpaceFalconCommanderSS02shoot’em-up.  You fight wave after wave of alien ships with three different types of weapons.  Primary weapon, which goes up to four levels, secondary weapon, laser gun, homing missle, and “electro-line”.  The alternate weapons have limited ammo.  Finally you have the special weapon of which there are three types, vertical, horizontal and radial blasts.  You get a special weapon after destroying 10 enemies and a bar fills up.  You can use the special only once at a time.

SpaceFalconCommanderSS03The controls are rather simple, you have the arrow keys to move your ship.  D or Spacebar, fires your primary weapon, A or shift fires your alternate, and S or CTRL fires your special.  P to pause.  The interface is simple too.  The info bar at the top has the score on the right, and lives on the left.  Under the bar is the little special weapons meter.

The iPhone version boasts Beautiful 3d graphics with a wide range of explosions and visual effects.  Also high quality sound and music.SpaceFalconCommanderSS04  Unfortunately the flash version is bare bones.  While you may not be able to do as much in flash as you can on the iPhone, I think flash games could do a little more.  The graphics although adequate are a little more than pixelated 2d versions of their iPhone counterparts, and it’s not even the good pixel art.  The sounds are ok, but there’s no music at all in the Flash version.

Final Analysis:  Well the game is somewhat fun, but I don’t think it gives you any real SpaceFalconCommanderSS05clue to what the iPhone version does just judging by the iPhone screenshots verses playing the flash version.  I wouldn’t say avoid it, but don’t expect much.  You can at least submit high scores if you sign up for a free account (username and password and such).  It comes in iPhone/iPod Touch, Mobile (phone), and Flash flavors.
