Cat Mario! (Syobon Action?)

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Nov24 Everyone loves Mario!  You do, don’t you?  You know Mario, the little Italian plumber from a series of games from Nintendo that goes back to the ancient Donkey Kong, and still 20-30 years later we’re still enjoying him.  You know, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World, and on and on.  Spin-offs of spin-offs, tv shows, and what have you, he’s become almost as recognized as Mickey Mouse the world over, and maybe even surpassed (I can’t remember but I might have read an article where he surpassed Mickey as the most famous fictional character), but I digress… There’s been a ton of fan games and rip offs.  Now let’s talk a little bit about cats.  Okay so they’re not as exciting.  But a lot of us love cats, take the characters in John Wizard Game’s Dawn’s Light for instance, or Cat Ladies.  So it makes some sense that someone, somewhere would create a game that has both CAT and MARIO elements.  It’s by some Japanese person, whom I don’t even know the name of because I can’t read Japanese.  This only makes sense though because Nintendo is a Japanese company.  What makes this game unique though (aside from the fact that you play a cat in what looks like a rip off of Super Mario Bros)?  You’re about to find out…

Bloom – Flower to the Power of Cute!

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Oct28 Every once in a thousand years a game comes along that redefines the meaning of cute!  This is not really that game.  Although it is cute.  It involves flowers, but not necessarily hippies as far as I can tell.  It is a platformer, although it’s not scrolling.  It is actually another game from Spell of Play, but it’s completely opposite of T.W.T.P.B.  The one, the only….BLOOOOOOOOM!  The totally awesome game about picking flowers…or not.  Okay, okay, I’m not actually picking on Bloom and this is not going to be a negative review.  I just meant the or not part if you didn’t really like picking flowers, or if you aren’t a girl.  Most girls like picking flowers, so you may think it’s awesome if you’re a girl.  Bloom is your typical platform-jumper-collect-things-get-to-the-exit game.  However it’s quite interesting.  It’s fun (if somewhat frustrating, but more on that later), it’s nice looking, almost-retro-quality-but-not-quite.  The music is calming as well as the sounds.  It makes me think of the original Ray-man a bit (in the sound department).  Would I buy it (if I could) ?  You betcha.  Actually I’m quite liking the few spell of play games I’ve already played.  Maybe we’ll see more reviews of them in the future.  Anyways if you want to know more, please read after watching this video of the game in action.

You can read more here.  Please I need all the eyes I can get, read the whole thing!

(xblig) Ninja Guardian sounds like an oxymoron —

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Okay well today’s review is on a game called Ninja Guardian by Phoenix Game Studios.  Attack an evil samurai warlord named… you guessed it “Evil Samurai Warlord”.  Anyways the object is for you to stop him by jumping on platforms and fighting like giant wasps and stuff.  I kid you not!  The unique thing about it is simply that you move from platform to platform.  To attack it’s the A button.  If you want to jump in mid-air it’s the right trigger.  You can also trigger temporary invincibility by the left trigger.  That’s pretty much it.  It makes it rather unique because the goal is simply to get to the top of the level.  The graphics are cute and resemble some sort of Asian paper artwork, although it reminds me of Chinese art rather than Japanese, but I suppose Japanese must have had their art as well so I guess it doesn’t really matter.  In any case I think it’s worth a play just because it’s kind of unique (and frustrating).  In any case if you want to go into why I think it’s worth a play read on.
