Star Guard rocks your retro world!

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Pew! Pew! Pew!  If you don’t know already that’s laser gun sounds as made by my mouth.  That’s my comment about Star Guard by Vacuum Flowers!  That’s it!  Kidding of course… this game is more fun than playing Star Wars with your 7-year-old friends and arguing who’s going to be Han Solo and who’s going to be Darth Vader!  “I get to be Darth Vader!”  “But you’re always Darth Vader!” “I have the inhaler!  Plus I know how to use the Dark Side of the force!”  “I get Han Solo, because I’m cooler than you!” “But I don’t want to be Luke Skywalker, how come you guys always get Darth Vader and Han Solo?!?” “Because you’re just a kid” “I’m six years old!” “But we’re 7 now grab your lightsaber Luke, I am your father!”  Well Star Guard is even better than that!

Note: While trying to be funny it may have sounded as sarcastic, but really Star Guard is retro-style-gaming-goodness and a side of fries!  Here’s the video to prove it:

I almost should just leave it at this like I did with Space Spy, only in this case it would be because of how awesome it is, instead of, well… I’ll just leave it there.  Anyways if you want to know more continue on…

Cat Mario! (Syobon Action?)

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Nov24 Everyone loves Mario!  You do, don’t you?  You know Mario, the little Italian plumber from a series of games from Nintendo that goes back to the ancient Donkey Kong, and still 20-30 years later we’re still enjoying him.  You know, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World, and on and on.  Spin-offs of spin-offs, tv shows, and what have you, he’s become almost as recognized as Mickey Mouse the world over, and maybe even surpassed (I can’t remember but I might have read an article where he surpassed Mickey as the most famous fictional character), but I digress… There’s been a ton of fan games and rip offs.  Now let’s talk a little bit about cats.  Okay so they’re not as exciting.  But a lot of us love cats, take the characters in John Wizard Game’s Dawn’s Light for instance, or Cat Ladies.  So it makes some sense that someone, somewhere would create a game that has both CAT and MARIO elements.  It’s by some Japanese person, whom I don’t even know the name of because I can’t read Japanese.  This only makes sense though because Nintendo is a Japanese company.  What makes this game unique though (aside from the fact that you play a cat in what looks like a rip off of Super Mario Bros)?  You’re about to find out…

PREVIEW: Chris Unarmed for XBLIG

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Our next preview is a platformer called Chris Unarmed by Chris Hughes.  This guy doesn’t even try to fake a company name, which is a good thing, since I think half the XBLIG developers use non-existent company names.  So that’s one point for him.  In Chris Unarmed you “Journey through a world of powerful wind currents, levers, conveyor belts, keys and much more, on a quest to save the world.”  Graphics look fairly simplistic, but because of all the things like said wind currents, etc, it looks like it will have good variety in the levels.  Unfortunately in the video it looks a little “floaty” and I don’t mean when it’s in stuff like air or water, I mean when it’s on regular platforms.  So here’s the trailer without sound:
