Edit: Reposting this because the developer of The Cherokee Indian (Jr Jellybeans) actually entered the drawing. I know nothing about American Indians. And yes I call them American Indians because Columbus thought he was sailing to the West Indies, as opposed to Indian Americans those that actually come from India and become legal citizens of the US. As far as Wikipedia says, they are a “Native American people originally from the Southeastern United States. In the 19th century, the Cherokees were known as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes", because they had assimilated numerous cultural and technological practices of their European-American neighbors. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, they are the largest of the 563 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. Of the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians have headquarters in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is located in Cherokee, North Carolina.” Okay so basically I just filled some space with copy and paste from Wikipedia. I did this because I don’t think any jokes concerning the Cherokee would be appropriate. Plus I don’t know any jokes concerning them or any American Indians, and it would probably just be in bad taste if I did. So now on with the game yeah!
I’m sorry but the game needs a little work, it’s ok, but it’s not great. See more, next.
Okay so basically The Cherokee Indian by Jr. Jellybeans is a platform game where you “will hunt and capture animals, discover secrets, and work to pass a set of trials to become a man.” Sounds like animal cruelty to me. No really I’m kidding, I have nothing against hunting it’s just way it’s said “you will hunt and capture animals” woohoo! To tell you the truth, I couldn’t really understand what you were supposed to do. Like what the goal is and stuff. I know you have to become a man but it doesn’t really tell you how. When you start up the game the title screen comes on and you basically click on start, continue, delete, or quit. When you click on start three “spots” come up and you must click on one, I assume these are save games. Now you get into the game where you’re taken to a cut scene. It simply goes through and shows the main character Bena going to different people and them telling him to go be a man. The bad part is you can’t get out of it. Next you’re presented with a level or room or whatever.
The controls are really simply, this is really the main good thing about this game. You use your mouse to move and direct Bena’s aim, left mouse button attacks or interacts, right mouse button jumps or cancels interaction. It does take a bit of practice to get used to moving a character in a platform game with only the mouse but it does seem to be fairly intuitive. Okay so here’s where it gets difficult. What the heck am I supposed to do? There’s a thing though, an icon or set of icons on the left that give you some idea of the goal for that level. In one there were like I don’t know wooden planks, like I was supposed to collect 24 two-by-fours. You get to chop trees down, so I guess that’s a plus. You can chop trees with berries, and kill animals with your axe. So the chopping thing is kind of fun, but I still don’t know what I’m doing. I think the game needs some text at the start of each level explaining what you’re supposed to do, as well as what all the icons and things mean. They have a little readme.txt file in the folder you install to, but nothing really telling you the menus and screen items and stuff.
As far as the music goes, that’s ok, the sound effects are sometimes a bit annoying (especially the bird sounds, because it’s like completely quiet and then you heard the bird sound effect that’s like loud and then abrupt nothing). The graphics leave something to be desired. The animations are pretty good but that’s about the only thing. In fact most of the sprite graphics are decent, but the background level graphics need some work.
In the end it’s just not that great of a game, mostly because of not knowing what to do. And then partly also because the background art needs to be a bit more polished. On a side note, one time I tried to exit to the menu and I got some sort of error “ERROR in action number 1 of Alarm Event for alarm 1for object sprite_controller: Trying to delete non-existing sound.” So that means it’s a little bit buggy as well.
