Entropy Poker A.I. – Sounds very umm… computery

Our next banner entrant is Ergod with Entropy Poker A.I.  I’m not really sure how to classify this.  It’s not strictly a game.  Sure Poker is a game, and sure you can play against the computer.  In fact as far as I can tell you don’t play against humans at all (Of course the only way you could do that is over the internet, but I digress).  Generally speaking this is a simulation designed to help you get good at poker by offering AI in the form of simulated neural nets.  Well if you don’t know what all that means, it simply means it tries to copy brain processes to provide it’s artificial intelligence.  Firstly I don’t think that much of this, not because it isn’t useful or what it’s for, but mostly because it’s not really set up as a game.  I wouldn’t run this software if I wanted to relax from a day of hard work.  I would, however, end up using it so I could up my game when I play poker with real people, which is precisely what it’s made for.

Okay so basically when you start it goes to a small menu which allows you to set the A.I.’s thinking time in either seconds or minutes, I’m not sure which because the game doesn’t really have any help set up.  There’s also number of opponents to choose.  Up to nine A.I.’s can be chosen.  There’s also a menu in the upper left hand corner of the screen.  You’ve got “Show Console” which shows a log of moves you’ve made, an About button, Hand History, and a tooltips on/off button.  None of this really shows you how to use the program really.  There are 3 “buttons” on the main screen for fold, call, and bet.  Then there’s 3 buttons on the lower left hand of the screen called Check/Fold, Call Any, Raise Any.  These are actually toggles but I can’t for the life of me figure out what they do.  Granted this program is for experienced Poker Players but it should at least give you some basic instructions on the version of Poker it’s playing, and what all the buttons mean.  There’s an auto-play button as well, so you can just watch the program play itself.

EntropyPokerAISS02 There’s no real graphics to speak of, other than card graphics, which I could forgive if they had some sort of music or sound effects or something.  I think it would have been better if he had made a simplified Poker game with advanced features, such as the A.I. Behavior and so forth.  That is all these “features” but in a more user friendly fashion.  The trial gives you 24 hours to play with it, but it’s 24 hours from the first time you play, rather than 24 hours of actual time spent in the game.  But I guess that’s ok considering most games only give you about a 60 minute demo.  My final thoughts on this are if you’re really good at poker and want to be great go ahead and download this program, otherwise don’t bother.
