(xblig)Wordzy for XBLCG – Whatzy?

July22 Words, Words, everywhere there’s words, in books and on game shows, it’s getting absurd, read this and that, can’t you read the words?  What’s up with word games?  Word games for fun and profit.  Everybody likes word games.  Jumble, Scrabble, Crossword puzzles, etc.  So it’s with some pleasure, okay a little pleasure, okay not really, word games aren’t my thing.  Well actually that’s not true, I like wheel of fortune.  I don’t mind doing crossword puzzles every once in a while.  In any case the next review is for the Xbox Live Community Game called Wordzy.

My thoughts on the game:  It’s just ok.  It’s essentially a guessing game, and it gives you no hints as to what the mystery word is other than filling in the first letter and giving you a bonus letter.  If you want to know more, it’s after the jump.

Okay first things first.  How to play.  Object is to solve a five letter mystery word.  You do this by scrolling through letters with the analog stick or directional pad.  Move left and right to change position in the word, and up and down to change letters.  When you’re ready hit the ‘A’ button to submit your word.  The X button will give you a bonus letter which is the next unsolved letter.  Solved letters show up in redboxes, letters that are in the word but in the wrong position are in yellow boxes and letters not in the word at all are green.  You get 5 guesses.

WordzySS02 There are 3 difficulty levels,  Normal, Hard, and Expert.  Normal and Hard modes both show you a starting letter.  On Normal it will use an easier dictionary to generate puzzles.  Hard uses the full dictionary, and Expert doesn’t show you a starting letter.  There are also a few game modes, one is timed, and another is point play, and another is round play.  Free play is like round play but unlimited rounds.  There’s also a multiplayer componant both online and offline.

WordzySS03 The sounds are adequate and the music is sort of jazzy but also a little repetitive.  The graphics are also adequate to get across the information you need to play the game but lacks any real visual flair.  Wordzy is kind of interesting but doesn’t really pull you in.  Sure it’s a word game and you can’t expect much from those, but really you can expect much less from this.  The problem stems from the fact that there’s no hint to the mystery word.  Even crosswords give hints.

If you are a word-game nut this might appeal to you, but for the rest of us, we may need something more.
