Bunny Press by Notch is actually quite an original and fun game.  Essentially you want to get to the goal, except, you have one or more ‘advancing walls of doom’.  You have bunnies lots of bunnies.  You also have boxes and boulders (or cannon balls or ball bearings or marbles or bowling balls or [insert perfect spherical device here].  Sometimes there are carrots in the way and you have to cause the bunnies to eat the carrots to get you through the tight spaces.  Sometimes you need a key.  Sometimes they are so thick they impede your progress and you need to use them round things to squash the bunnies to help you get through.  All in the name of Science.  Actually just kidding about the science part.  The bunnies and your character get squished by spikes, and the bunnies by the boulders with blood splatters and stains on the ground.  It’s not gross though as it’s cartoony and comical.  The game is quite fun.  Use the arrow keys to move.  There’s flash and downloadable versions of it, I played the flash version which includes a level reset button, which I guess the downloadable (or compo) version doesn’t include.  Still it’s a fun game, and you should try it.

(ags) Ben Jordan Case 3 – Something witchy this way comes!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

May20 Today is another Ben Jordan adventure game!  Wow, Ben Jordan seems to be getting a lot of cases under his belt now.  The Skunk Ape, the lost galleon of the Salton Sea and now his third adventure, The Sorceress of Smailholm.  I keep wanting to say Snail home but Smailholm it is.  This time it takes place in Scotland… oooh spooky Scotland, land of Highland Flings, Caber-tossing,  and the most horrifying thing of all HAGGIS! (No offense to the Scottish but I think minced sheep heart, lungs and liver with oatmeal, suet, and onions boiled in an animals stomach is pretty darn scary!)  Since I am going to be revising the format a bit, I should start by saying what I think of it.  So here it is.

What I think of it:  It doesn’t seem much different than case 2 in graphics and design, however an interesting story coupled with a “competitor” for Ben Jordan makes up for that.  Ben Jordan’s 3rd case is fairly solid.  Details after the break.

I’ve linked to the update of tombed.  Apparently the author felt the Z and Spacebar could be used along with the shift and also removed blur.  Okay this is neat and pixelly.  You play Danger Jane as she tries to dig her way to treasure.  Only there’s an ADVANCING WALL OF DOOM, DUH duh DUHHHHH!  Okay well I’m beat after that.  Essentially you use the shift key to dig and arrow keys to move.  Not so tough, except the huge spikes just keep coming down and are relentless.  I couldn’t keep up, eventually I came to a part that was too hard and the wall overtook me.  Graphics are as I said neat and pixelly, and the sounds, sounded like they almost came from the pc speaker, except they were coming out of the regular speakers.  Nice little retro game.  Get it here: tombed.
