(wme) Eight Squares in the Garden – ‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves…

Apr27 Through the Looking Glass was Lewis Carroll’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  Alice wonder’s what it’s like on the other side of the mirror.  She then is able to pass through it.  She meets the Red Queen there and the queen offers her a throne to her, if she can get to the 8’th square.  There’s also the poem The Jabberwocky which she can only read by holding it up to a mirror.  Reason I mention the poem is here, I will recite a line or two.  Ahem! <clears throat> “’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves, Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;  All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.  "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!  The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!  Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun the frumious Bandersnatch!"”  – Okay so I’m like, umm what what, and what?  They call it literary nonsense, like it’s on purpose or something, which it probably is.  In fact supposedly the effect of nonsense is caused by an excess of meaning, rather than the lack of it.  I guess what it means is, that it’s so full of symbolism and meaning that it comes out as nonsense.  Contrariwise they may be using nonsense to cover up their meaning, that is if they’re meaning something, that is supposed to look like it means nothing, thereby masking the meaning.  If you get my, umm… meaning.

Apr20How about another AGS game by Wadjet Eye Games.  From the developer of the The Shivah and the Blackwell Legacy, comes another Blackwell game called Blackwell Unbound.  Let’s go back in time to 1973, this time it’s not about Rosangela, it’s about her aunt Lauren.  This is also set in New York City as apparently are most of Wadjet Eye Games’ settings.  It will change when we get to Emerald City Confidential in a future review.  Looks like Dave Gilbert topped himself yet again.  Let’s see what he has in store for us next.

Special Note:  It’s listed on the games page as being under the Shivah, indicating possibly being the second game, it’s actually cheaper than Legacy.  So I might be wrong in thinking this is the second game made.  Unless it was made after as a prequel.  In any case maybe someone can clarify.

Apr13Remember back in the day when games were still 2D, and you had to use your imagination to make that lonely pixel turn into a space ship, or a human, or a mouse in a maze?  Okay now remember earlier than that?  You know back in the back in the day.  You had to type everything and REALLY use your imagination to make that word conjure up images of daring sword fights, dangerous pirate battles, or exciting princess rescues?  Yeah, okay so go back even farther, you know when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.  ER maybe that was too far.  Let’s fast forward to the days of wine and text adventures.  The days where one wrong move could kill you, and if you didn’t have a save game you had to play the whole blasted thing over.  Or where you could ultimately get stuck and not ever be able to finish the game and not know where you went wrong.  Well those days are over, so get over it!
