Breakout of the mold!
You ever just wanna break stuff? Of course you have! We all have. That’s why we have Breakout and clones. Breakout was sort of based on Pong (the first commercially successful arcade game). Like if you flipped Pong on it’s side so it’s vertical, and like added bricks, and then removed a player, then you would have Breakout. Over the years it’s had it’s share of imitators, most notable being Arkanoid for the arcade. Arkanoid added several innovations in addition to actually adding graphics, it added things like dropping brick power-ups. You knew someone had to do it for XBLCG. Actually there is at least one more Breakout clone in community games. I’ll probably review that some other time. (Maybe I should have done both of them today, ahh well.) In any case this new one is called bricks4ever, yeah real creative name there, by Running Pixel. I guess if they’ve used all the names you can think of, you tend to grab for whatever will set you apart.

The wonderful world of box pushing…
Remember the days when box pushing was fun? Slide a box here, move there, make sure you don’t trap yourself. Ahh, the joys of being a warehouse keeper. What? Those days aren’t over. You can experience them over and over again. That’s right be it PC or Mac, XBOX or Playstation, you can have the fun again of playing the box pusher. You know the game I’m talking about. Sokoban and it’s millions of variations. In fact even yours truly had the opportunity to create levels for a 3d Sokoban-style game called Grek’s Puzzle Challenge (the last game on the page). Originally created in 1980 by some Japanese dude (you can read the Wikipedia entry as linked above), it has come to be loved and played by millions. It’s no surprise, then, that it should come to Xbox Live Community games, in the form of Penga’s Peril.

Okay hope I didn’t offend anyone by the title (you never know who finds offense at mock broken English). Seriously though the tangram started out as some furniture set that later materialized into a set of wooden blocks for playing. No really! Check out tangram on Wikipedia! Basically the object of the puzzle is to form a specific shape using all seven pieces which may not overlap. I think I played it once or twice, interesting puzzle. What does this have to do with our next game?
Well our next game just happens to be called “Invalid Tangram” by Josh Szepietowski. I don’t really know what’s invalid about it though, maybe the bad guys are “invalid” tangrams. Maybe your ship is, but who knows. I do know this is a very interesting mix of match-3 and vertical scrolling shooter. Well in actuality you can match two it doesn’t just have to be three. Josh made this at the Guildhall at SMU. Essentially a game development program at Southern Methodist University which is in Dallas, Texas. As is stated on his homepage — Invalid Tangram has been chosen as 1 of 10 Student Showcase Finalists out of more then 100 entrants in the 2007 Independent Games Festival. Invalid Tangram was one of four programmer games picked to be shown at The Guildhall 2005 Winter Exhibition. — Impressive, most impressive.
