Invalid Tangram – Confucius say: ancient Chinese furniture make great puzzle.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Okay hope I didn’t offend anyone by the title (you never know who finds offense at mock broken English).  Seriously though the tangram started out as some furniture set that later materialized into a set of wooden blocks for playing.  No really!  Check out tangram on Wikipedia!  Basically the object of the puzzle is to form a specific shape using all seven pieces which may not overlap.  I think I played it once or twice, interesting puzzle.  What does this have to do with our next game?

InvalidTangramSS01 Well our next game just happens to be called “Invalid Tangram” by Josh Szepietowski.  I don’t really know what’s invalid about it though, maybe the bad guys are “invalid” tangrams.  Maybe your ship is, but who knows.  I do know this is a very interesting mix of match-3 and vertical scrolling shooter.  Well in actuality you can match two it doesn’t just have to be three.  Josh made this at the Guildhall at SMU.  Essentially a game development program at Southern Methodist University which is in Dallas, Texas.  As is stated on his homepage — Invalid Tangram has been chosen as 1 of 10 Student Showcase Finalists out of more then 100 entrants in the 2007 Independent Games Festival.  Invalid Tangram was one of four programmer games picked to be shown at The Guildhall 2005 Winter Exhibition.  — Impressive, most impressive.

Space Falcon Commander – Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Space Falcon? – Flash

Friday, March 27th, 2009

"Should I have?"
"It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I’ve outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I’m talking about the big Corellian ships now. She’s fast enough for you old man. What’s the cargo?"

SpaceFalconCommanderSS01Okay okay, so that was the Millennium Falcon.  But now we have the Space Falcon.  Space Falcon Commander that is.  Just what IS Space Falcon Commander, you ask?  It’s a game.  “I know it’s a game, you imbecile!” I hear you shout in your minds!  It’s a game for the iPhone.  Ahhh… Wait a second, Uhfgood, you don’t do iPhone games, do you?  You’re quite right, I don’t have an iPhone, or an iPod Touch, which by the way if anyone could oblige me with one, I’ll be happy to review iPhone games, er that is, if you can actually play a demo on those things.  Maybe they’re so low priced, they don’t do demos?  However since this is Flash Friday, I had the opportunity to play a flash version of it.

(xblig) ZP2K9 – Zombies and Pirates and Guns, Oh my! – XBLCG

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I’m not talking about some twisted version of the Wizard of Oz, although that would be supremely cool.  I’m talking about ZP2K9.  What is ZP2K9. you ask?  Glad you asked that.  ZP2K9. or Zombies verses Pirates 2009 by Ska Studios is a platform-scrolling, gun toting, zombie marching, pirate plundering, shoot-fest for XBox Live Community Games!

ZP2K9. is basically a death-match style 2d platform-scrolling shooter.  You take on the role of the titular zombie or pirate and attempt to blast other players or bots (AI agents).  That’s pretty much it.  When you setup your player you can choose either the human team, or the zombie team.  Each “team” has seven skins – A dude, a Ninja, a chick, a Pirate, a “crusader” or knight, a Viking, and a Samurai.  There are three game types, single player, xbox live multiplayer, and system link multiplayer.  Unfortunately I was only able to review the single player, and only 8 minutes at a time.  But I believe this was enough.
